Comuni-canti have been performed for the first time by the El Cimarrón Ensemble at the festival "opera ma novità" Teatro Civico di Sassari on 10-12-2008. This work was born out of the idea to follow the tracks of events, feelings and imagery, evoked by some selected poems of Emily Dickinson, using the medium of correlated musical images, as if weaving a net. The images are interconnected by way of an invisible thread running through one after the other like a string of pearls. These songs were denominated "communal" by virtue of them being communicative and interrelated, telling everyday stories and containing imagery that refers us to the universe and the absolute. Melancholy, pain, resignation, irony and the challenging of god, of death, of life and of immortality by way of memory and of lifelessness by way of inner pain. All that is being echoed in sound, by way of the human voice, right there where it reaches its most lyric expression, carried by the other instruments, supporting and accompanying it on this short meditative trip with no return. These chants embrace each other tightly and follow one single trail, that yet enigmatically points into multiple directions. They seize, sense, incorporate and transfigure each atmosphere, each image and trait of Dickinson`s poetic work. A spectrum of colors and themes as well as of melodic segments quite similar to each other and yet extremely rich in nuance, references and fusions create a sphere of timelessness, an aura, from where escape seems to be impossible, if there were not the foreshadowing of death in the final movement. There is no way to perceive and judge those musical images in a more profound manner - thanks to the particular characteristics of sound of the instruments and their interaction a precious filigree artwork evolves. There are higher and lower levels of consciousness, though.
